CALAS

Latin America in the Global Knowledge Society

In the past, Latin America has propelled discussions in the humanities and social sciences by originating theoretical models, such as dependency theory, in international think tanks. Yet, there are very few visible Centers for Advanced Studies (CAS) stimulating and uniting Latin American knowledge production. To address this deficiency, CALAS seeks to set in motion the establishment of a new research environment through the foundation of research centers, and to thus help create the conditions for a new trans-regional and dialogue-oriented generation of researchers on an international level.

This transversal axis – “Latin America in the Global Knowledge Society” – will offer a critical reflection on the current conditions of knowledge production within Latin America. By broaching these issues CALAS will not only trigger debates on regional knowledge societies but also provide room for discussion by organizing workshops and working groups that allow for knowledge and institutional transfer to help build further Centers for Advanced Studies in Latin America.
