Research project as a fellow of  CALAS at the Southern Cone & Brazil regional headquarters (July 2019-November 2019):

Title: Visions of peace in the Mapuche: moral imagination and the geographic imagination in a cross-border cultural-political project

Abstract: The project seeks to analyze the visions of peace of the Mapuche people taking as the axis two interrelated dimensions of their thought and action: a) their moral imagination: the set of slogans and convictions about what peace is and; b) their geographical imagination: their perspective on what spatial ordering, what relationship with nature, what appropriation of everyday space and what territoriality promote peace. In the Mapuche concept of Az Mapu, this conjunction between spatial imagination and moral imagination is well expressed in its concept. Mapueches interviews, novels, poetry, memory works, music, and manifestos will be the main source for the analysis of visions of peace.

The project contributes to the recent local turn in peace studies that is marked by academicism and lacks studies on the actions of communities to build spaces for peace. Communities have shown that geographic and moral imagination are inseparable dimensions in peacebuilding projects. Investigating these dimensions in the cultural-political project of the Mapuche would allow the introduction of various political and conceptual innovations in the study of the many states of peace and the spatiality of peace. The main of these innovations is to contribute to the epistemic decolonization of the studies of peace and spatiality. Rescuing the visions of peace of the Mapuches from their cultural-political project would also make it possible to make contributions to the understanding of violence, conflict resolution, and solutions to crises in the contemporary world.
