Elites, Inequality and Wealth in Latin America

Elites, Inequality and Wealth in Latin America

With the onset of the pandemic, poverty and inequality have also grown drastically in Latin America. The UN commission CEPAL predicts a social development regression of almost three decades. But not only misery has increased. At the same time, the number of the richest and super-rich has also increased significantly during COVID-19. It becomes clear that Latin America's problem is not scarcity of resources, but the insufficient distribution of these resources.

The conference will present this panorama of unequal distribution in its various historical, social, economic and cultural facets, analyse the elites who repeatedly succeed in reproducing the enormous wealth and blocking the opportunities for redistribution through tax and social policies, and discuss options for making the region more equitable and sustainable after Corona.

The conference will take place at the Center for Latin American Studies (CELA), at Kassel University. Participation is free and without charge. Registration is required until June 17, 2022 (via e-mail: cela@uni-kassel.de
